Club history

The club was started in 1970 by Ray Lewis, Alf Ayres and others. At one time the club boasted a membership of fifty people, several of whom went on to represent the County of Kent both at Junior and Senior level.

The club was originally based at the AEI Sports Ground on Kings Farm Estate and from a very early stage the members of Gravesend (AEI) Archers were involved in local competitions and league matches.

1993 saw the arrival of Steven Clarke in the club. Steven first tried archery at a have-a-go stall at the Cobham Fair. Within a year he was in the county team and had already broken several county records. Steven subsequently went on to set national records that still stand today.

At a Special General Meeting held at the North West Kent College of Technology on Saturday 6th February 1999 at 11:10 am the current chairman, Doug Clarke, explained to the Meeting that as we are shortly moving to the Meopham Ground, we would need to drop the AEI part of our name. As a member section at AEI we had been required to have this as part of our name. As we will no longer be associated with the AEI/Henley Sports Club, it seems appropriate that this be amended. All members present voted in favour of adopting the name ‘Gravesend Archers’.

The official opening at Meopham took place on Saturday 17th April 1999 when Meopham School Estates Manager, Frank Harding, shot the traditional first arrow. 11th October 2005 indoor shooting started at Axton Chase School, which allowed room to accommodate more members, shoot at up to 25 metres and have a sufficient room for tuning and coaching when required.
